ARE YOU ALLOWED TO WILD CAMP IN SCOTLAND?



The overall answer is YES!

But (there's always a but) there are rules and regulations you need to adhere to aswell as general common sense - take a look at how to safely and legally wild camp in Scotland! 

According to visitscotland.com, you need to familiarise yourself with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code before you decide to go wild camping. It's not full of rules but just a basic guide that campers should follow for a 'leave-no-trace' policy. 


IMPORTANT THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW


According to Scotland's access legislation, the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003, you are allowed to camp on most unenclosed land.
However, due to wild camping becoming so popular, East Loch Lomond is subject to wild camping byelaws
Don't just think where you are staying should be fine - always double check the laws. 

TOP TIPS TO FOLLOW

  • Don't leave rubbish or litter anywhere, basically leave it as you found it. 
  • Never light an open fire near forests or in dry periods and when possible, use a stove rather than an open fire. 
  • If you're unsure about something, double check with the owner of the land. 
  • If a location is busy, move onto another site to avoid overcrowding.
