BEGINNERS GUIDE: TO DRIVING A CAMPERVAN

So, you're either reading this because you've already hired a campervan OR you're scared to hire one and want tips. Either way, we've got you covered!

Here are our 7 top tips on driving a campervan or motorhome for beginners!

1. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

Before you set off on your journey, find somewhere (preferably an empty car park) where you can practice and get your bearings. You will want to get used to the size of the campervan and know your turning radius well in advance so you aren't stuck in a situation whilst stressed!

2. CHECK YOUR SIZES

There's nothing worse than coming up to a bridge and panicking that you won't fit underneath so double check the size of your campervan first. This is usually on the top left or right of the inside of the windscreen but don't rely on that. Make sure you've got it written somewhere which is easily accessible so that you can see from afar the size of a campsite, bridge or car park's restrictions and then know whether you will fit!

3. TAKE YOUR TIME

This is YOUR holiday which means to enjoy the journey to wherever you're going, you need to know how to drive your home on wheels SO take your time, you aren't in a rush. Get used to the size, the responsiveness of the wheel or clutch and how it feels when you turn a corner. This will also get you used to how to pack away your things so that nothing is rolling around the van every time you brake or turn a corner.

4. MIRRORS MIRRORS MIRRORS

When driving a normal car, you have use of your side mirrors AND wing mirror but with a campervan you only have use of your side mirrors which takes getting used to. Get the feel of the driving with just the side mirrors before you head off.

5. KNOW YOUR LIMITS

Every van, car or lorry has limits that the vehicle can go so check what those are for your particular campervan. You don't want to be driving down the motorway with your campervan shuddering because you're driving like a normal car. Definitely something to think about and look into.

6. ASK FOR HELP

If you're struggling to park or get space bearings AND if you're travelling with someone, ask them (politely) to get out of the van and stand behind or to the side of the van. Then all you need to do is open the window and shout at each other! But in all seriousness, this will help you know how much space you have in the future and usually there's loads of space left!

7. BACK INTO SPACES

When you back into spaces you are aware of whatever is around you and the cars or surroundings are most likely to stay still, making it easier to then drive out when you decide to leave. But if you drive in, which may seem easier at the time, it will be difficult to navigate out with people or other moving vehicles. So also think, REVERSE into the space.
